Recent Update of Rehabilitation after Rotator Cuff Repair
Lee In-Sik

Abstract
The goals of rehabilitation after rotator cuff repair are to achieve healing of the cuff while restoring pain-free motion and function. Patient-related factors, such as prior surgery, smoking, and comorbidities, undoubtedly influence tendon healing, rehabilitation, and ultimate clinical outcomes. Many rehabilitation protocols for rotator cuff repair are based pri-marily on anecdotal clinical observation and empirical clin-ical experience without sufficient scientific evidences. These protocols indicate a specific exercise/activity progression based on healing time lines. An evaluation-based protocol takes into account not only healing time lines but also the attainment of specific clinical goals. Recently, as surgical techniques and materials have been being developed, the tissue quality of the rotator cuff and the structural integrity of the shoulder joint tend to be emphasized in the re-habilitation after rotator cuff repair. So, recent trends and debates of postoperative rehabilitation after rotator cuff re-pair are reviewed as comparing the accelerated re-habilitation protocol with the delayed rehabilitation protocol.
